Hey everyone... Bella will be turning 2 next month and i think she has hit that dreaded hormonal phase .She is making funny little noises and doing a little bit different "Pionus" strut, fluttering her wings at the same time. I haven't seen her rubbing on perches yet. Anything i should or shouldn't be doing??? She's still lovie dovie with everyone which is a good thing

Re: Bella needs a boyfriend lol
my only recommendations are to not let her...pleasure herself...on you or another human. She might claim him/her as a mate and bite everyone else. Also try not to let her access 'prime nesting space' (cabinet, open backpack, pop box, etc they can be creative) because then she might start laying eggs which is rough on the system.
OH! And try to avoid feeding her warm mushy foods - it's ideal food for feeding chicks so it'll enhance her hormones.
And keep to a regular sleep time that lasts around 10 hours - if she is up late her body reads it as SUMMERTIME! which is also MATING TIME!
Good luck

Re: Bella needs a boyfriend lol
Andrea has excellent suggestions.
I usually interrupt the mating dance when Jimmy starts with peek-a-boo time or turn up the music and do dance and sing time with birds and he normally just stops. I don't make it known to him why I'm doing it and completely ignore the squeaking and fluffing and play with the other birds. He soon sees they are having more fun than he is. Hope that helps

Hard to say how long it will last. The ideas from Carol and Andrea are great.
Not to instigate anything but the girl at Pet Value in Wasaga has a one year old for sale.

I had one that spent most of one day with me at the All About Pets event. Her current owner said she could easily go home with me and that she does not usually take to people. I felt very honored. I love Tiamo

Yes, i know Catherine ...AMAZON??? lol. I've always steered away from them as ppl say they are hard parrots to have, being the "hot 5" and all.

I have a White Fronted and she is a real hoot. The baby yellow naped is only four weeks old so we will
see how he/she developes. So far so sweet.

Hormones
Jimmy is actually one of the easiest of Amazons when it comes to hormones and aggression. Double yellow is up there at the top of the hot list

Re: Bella needs a boyfriend lol
Hi Kimmie
My husband has a 2 year old female White Capped Pionus Xev who has been doing the strut, flapping her wings etc. and we just ignore her. The main thing to avoid a nesting site. Some birds are turned on by a rainy season, lighting etc.
My male Meyers Bronco has also been doing his flash dance where he drops his wings, flaps them making a weird meowing noise and flashing his turquoise feathers under his wings at me which the only time I see that part of him. I ignore it too.
I guess we almost need a calander to keep track of when the hormones kick in.
