Okay, so all of my birds look like they have the mange. Obviously, they don't. Nor do they have beak-and-feather disease. The vet is convinced that Callie is a chewer and Cricket is just having a bad molt (I had her check for Giardia, just in case), but I'm convinced their diet sucks. The choices here in the stores are pretty bad. Mostly stuff with seeds in it, because that's what sells. When I do find a bag of Zupreem, it's usually expired or due to expire soon. So -- I'm going to order some food from Foster and Smith's. Since they're used to getting colored food, I don't think switching to anything certified organic is the thing to do yet, but I'm looking at some Pretty Bird species-specific foods. There's a Hi-Pro Special which is "great for the high-protein needs of cockatoos and Amazons." Any comments or knowledge that anyone can offer in this area?

I can get the Zupreem from Foster's and Smith's. I'll be getting that for the little ones from now on. I was really curious though, if any of you knew anything about cockatoos needing a high-protein diet. I don't want to be a bad mother and deny my big girl her nutrition! lol

Pete has done really well on the pretty bird gold if that helps you any. He sure doesn't need any added protein in his diet

Re: Birdie nutrition
Okay, thanks Carol! I'll see if I can get a smaller bag of each, so I can see what Miss Fuss-Budget will eat. There are days when we just pour the food out of her dish onto a corner of the floor of her cage because she sends everything down there anyway. And by putting it in the corner, it doesn't get pooped on.
I brought her with me to do phone banking for our local state assemblyman, lol! She wasn't impressed. In fact, she hissed at him! I think it was his "fierce eyebrows."

Re: Birdie nutrition
None of my fids like nuts, so they'd go uneaten no matter what the percentage. I try to stay away from seed blends, because they'll all eat the seeds before anything else. Sorry I can't help!

Re: Birdie nutrition
If I offer a mix it's usually a bean mix I cook and add a little cinnamon to get them to eat it. My 4 upstairs birds all eat it with no problem...Jassy, Mindy, Frankie and Georgie. But those downstairs birds are SOOOO fussy If I offer seeds and nuts it's treat time. Limited because of the fat content. Most of those mixes all have seeds and nuts and as Chris said the birds would only eat what they liked the best and leave everything else like the veggies.
